When one spends as much time training for an event as is required for running Comrades, one has a lot of time to think. And plan….and think some more.
In all of this time, I have devised Ten Commandments that I shall follow on Comrades race day, May 29th.
1. Thou shalt not continue running if there is a pebble in thy shoe; thou shalt stop and take it out, then continue running.
2. Thou shalt not ignore the tell-tale rubbing of a blister. Thou shalt stop and apply Friction Block sooner rather than later.

3. Thou shalt adhere to thy run/walk plan from the very beginning, making alterations as geography dictates. When thou doubts the efficacy of the strategy, thou shalt remember it worked brilliantly at Cowtown.
4. Thou shalt smile and high-five the spectators even especially when thou feels like weeping.
5. Thou shalt give thanks at each kilometer marker for someone who has supported thy journey.
6. Thou shalt sing “Shosholoza” at the starting line with the energy & spirit it deserves.
7. Thou shalt represent thy country and home state with pride.

8. Thou shalt worry not about what lies ahead. Thou shalt stay focused on each step, rejoicing in the journey.
9. Thou shalt remember that thou signed thine self up for this. To thine own self be true.
10. Thou shalt admire God’s creation, from the beauty of the mass of creation moving towards Durban at thy side to the cheering throngs to the countryside of Africa through which thou runs.
